How to Measure Curtains

Measuring for curtains

For the best performance, your curtain track or pole should be positioned approximately 4-6" higher than the window, and be wider than your window by 6-8" either side.

Window treatments are always measured width by length, and the width is always stated first. The length is always measured from the top of the rod pocket to the bottom of the panel.

Measuring curtain width:

Measure the width of the rod from left to right. To achieve a look of proper fullness, the curtains finished width should be 2-3 times the width of your window. Less fullness will produce a more tailored look, while more fullness will create a richer appearance.

Measuring curtain length:

Measure the length of the window or area you want to cover from top to bottom. Overall curtain length, anywhere from the sill, just below the window sill or to the floor is a personal preference and need not be exact. By moving your rod up or down a little you can adjust the position of the curtain at your window.
