Please note:  The highlighted sizes are most common.  Most of the bedding available throughout our site can be purchased in any of these eight sizes.

The sizes in the table above are based on the commonly accepted standard.  Be aware that bed size names vary in different countries, different cultures and even different parts of the same country. They can actually differ in both name and size specifications from one manufacturer to another. Make sure to measure your mattress before making your purchase so that the bed linens you order will both fit and be suitable to you.

Fitted Sheets or Mattress Covers:  Please note that mattress depths (or height) vary widely by manufacturer. Measure the depth of your mattress before purchasing sheets. Standard and older mattresses average 9-12" (23-30cm), while newer pillow-top mattresses are 14-16" (36-41cm) deep and up. These deeper mattresses will require additional depth in fitted sheets or mattress covers.

Description of Sizes

Twin 39" x 75" (or single)

This is the size of bed that is most likely to be used for children's rooms, day beds, and hideaways (high risers).

Twin Extra Long 39" x 80" (Twin XL)

Found extensively in dorm rooms and is 5" longer than regular twin. Bedding can be hard to find. At Shop Bedding we carry an extensive selection of bedding available in twin XL sizes.

Full 54" x 75" (Double)

Full size beds are 15" wider than Twin beds. Usually used for a single person who wants an extra wide bed. Full beds may be too short for some adults. Bedding and Mattresses are usually less expensive than queen or king size. You may sometimes use Queen size sheets, which will have more drop length.

Queen 60" x 80"

Queen beds make a good choice for guest rooms and smaller master bedrooms. The most common size bed in America, Queen Beds are 6" wider (and 5" longer) than a Full size bed. Pillows are larger than the standard size used on twin and full beds. The 80" length comfortably accommodates most adults. Bedding is easy to find.

King 76" x 80" (Eastern King)

King beds are growing in popularity. King is 16" wider than a Queen bed. An Eastern King bed comes with one mattress, but the box springs come in two pieces so it is more easily moved about. Sheets are easy to find and are generally labeled simply "King". Taller people may prefer the California King instead with its longer length. All bedding is most expensive in king sizes. Pillows for this bed are available in the larger King size.

California King 72" x 84" (Western King)

California King is narrower and longer than a standard (Eastern) King mattress, making it more suitable for skinny tall people. Bedding is labeled "California King" or "Western King". A California King bed set comes with one mattress, and the box spring divided in two portions to be more manageable when moving. Sheets are hard to find in stores outside California, but are available on Shop Bedding. Use 2 King sized pillows to fill up the width of this bed.
